The 2026 Turkmenistan Football Cup has officially kicked off on May 6, featuring thrilling quarter-final matches across the nation. This marks the 35th year of the prestigious domestic football cup, showcasing eight of the top clubs vying for one of the country's most esteemed trophies.
Enthusiasts across Turkmenistan are eagerly watching the tournament unfold, with well-known clubs gearing up for a chance to advance to the semi-finals. Three teams from the capital, Ashgabat, are in the running this season: Altyn Asyr, Ashgabat, and Kopetdag.
Also competing are Nebitchi from Balkanabat, Shagadam from Turkmenbashy, Merv from Mary, Ahal from the Ahal region, and last year's champions, Arkadag from Arkadag city.
The opening quarter-final match kicked off in Turkmenbashy, where Shagadam squared off against Kopetdag in front of enthusiastic local fans. This match generated significant buzz among football aficionados eager to witness the commencement of this year's competitive domestic cup.
In Ashgabat, there were three additional quarter-final fixtures, one of which featured the capital derby between Altyn Asyr and Ashgabat, set in the Buzmeyin district. Fans anticipated a thrilling encounter, given the rich football traditions of both teams and their passionate supporters.
Defending champions Arkadag kicked off their title defense against Merv at Nisa Stadium, entering the tournament with strong confidence after their previous victory, solidifying their status as a leading club in Turkmen football.
Another key quarter-final match saw Ahal take on Nebitchi at the multifunctional Ashgabat Stadium. Ahal has a wealth of experience and was the runner-up in last year’s final, following a dramatic loss to Arkadag.
Football officials have announced that the second-leg quarter-finals will occur on June 24, allowing teams ample time to prepare for the vital return matches. The home-and-away format promises an electrifying competition as teams fight for a spot in the semi-finals.
Last year, Arkadag secured the Turkmenistan Cup for the third time, triumphing over Ahal with a 2-1 score in the final. The 2026 edition is expected to deliver thrilling football as clubs nationwide strive for national acclaim and a lasting legacy in Turkmenistan's football narrative.
