The United Arab Emirates has announced a fresh commitment of $5 million to the Sudan Humanitarian Fund, underscoring its dedication to bolstering emergency relief initiatives as Sudan grapples with an escalating humanitarian crisis.
This commitment was established via a formal agreement signed between the UAE Aid Agency and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan. The financial support aims to enhance rapid-response operations, ensuring that life-saving assistance reaches the most at-risk communities affected by ongoing conflicts and displacements.
Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, emphasized that the intensifying humanitarian conditions in Sudan call for immediate and coordinated international efforts. He pointed to the vast displacement of civilians into neighboring nations like Chad, South Sudan, Uganda, and Ethiopia, illustrating the regional consequences of the crisis.
“The deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan necessitates enhanced collective measures and prompt responses to aid early recovery, foster stability, and mitigate the serious challenges millions are confronting,” Al Ameri asserted.
The United Nations has welcomed this contribution, with Sajeda Al Shawa, Head of OCHA’s Office in the UAE, voicing gratitude for the UAE’s ongoing assistance. She noted that the funds will be vital for ensuring the timely provision of life-saving support in adherence to humanitarian principles.
“This contribution will help to fortify rapid humanitarian response systems and make sure that aid reaches those in urgent need promptly,” she added.
Since the onset of the current crisis, the UAE has delivered $784 million in humanitarian aid to Sudan. Over the last decade, the total UAE assistance to Sudan has soared to $4.24 billion, evidencing a steadfast commitment to supporting the Sudanese population during challenging times.
Additionally, the UAE has reiterated its appeal for a humanitarian ceasefire, emphasizing the necessity to protect civilians and facilitate the safe, unhindered delivery of aid. Officials stated that such measures are crucial for alleviating suffering, restoring stability, and endorsing long-term peace efforts in Sudan.
