The United Arab Emirates and Malaysia have made a crucial advancement in institutional cooperation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the UAE Accountability Authority and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
This MoU was signed in Abu Dhabi during the official visit of Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Haji Azam bin Baki, Chief Commissioner of the MACC, marking a collaboration aimed at enhancing accountability, governance standards, and anti-corruption initiatives, showcasing a mutual dedication to institutional integrity and transparency.
This initiative further builds on the robust economic relationship that exists between the two nations. In October 2025, the UAE and Malaysia activated a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) aimed at boosting bilateral trade, attracting investments, and enhancing private sector collaboration.
The CEPA is particularly significant as it is Malaysia’s inaugural trade agreement with a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member. This agreement symbolizes a progressive move in Kuala Lumpur's interaction with the Arab world. In 2024, bilateral trade reached $5.5 billion, and the agreement is set to more than double this figure in the coming years.
Through the CEPA framework, both countries are dedicated to lowering or abolishing tariffs on numerous goods, simplifying customs processes, and fostering a favorable business environment. A prominent goal is to increase non-oil trade to $13.5 billion by 2032, representing a decisive move towards diversified and sustainable economic progress.
Ultimately, the new accountability MoU alongside the CEPA signifies a more extensive strategic partnership, integrating economic growth with solid governance, and positioning the UAE-Malaysia relationship for enduring, beneficial development.
