The UK government has given the green light to a substantial defence deal valued at 453 million pounds, approximately 608 million US dollars, aimed at upgrading radar systems on Typhoon fighter jets. Officials assert that this initiative will bolster the nation’s safety in light of escalating security threats, particularly those associated with Russia.
The contract has been awarded to prominent defence firms, such as BAE Systems and Leonardo. This upgrade will equip the Typhoon fleet with the advanced ECRS Mk2 radar, significantly enhancing pilots' ability to detect threats, track multiple targets, and engage effectively in contemporary combat scenarios.
As a pivotal component of the UK's air defence, Typhoon jets are routinely deployed to patrol British airspace and address any suspicious activities near national borders. Maintaining their operational prowess is deemed crucial for the nation's security.
Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the importance of this upgrade amidst increasing global threats. He referenced notable Russian drone assaults in Ukraine and recurrent incidents near NATO airspace as clear indicators. The new radar technology, according to Healey, will safeguard the UK domestically while reinforcing its cooperative stance with international allies.

Last year, the UK clinched an 8 billion pound deal with Turkey for Typhoon jets, and officials anticipate more contracts with nations like Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
As part of a broader defence strategy, the UK plans to escalate military spending to 2.6 percent of its economic output by 2027, demonstrating a long-term pledge to sustain defensive readiness amid rising global tensions.
Simultaneously, defence company Leonardo awaits a decision on a separate helicopter contract worth around 1 billion pounds. The firm has cautioned that without this deal, it may face factory closures in southwest England, jeopardising around 3,000 jobs. The government has indicated that this decision will be integrated into its overarching defence investment strategy, which has experienced delays.
