UK Transfers 10 Individuals Following Hantavirus Scare from Cruise Ship

Post by : Bianca Haleem

On Tuesday, UK health authorities announced the transfer of 10 individuals connected to a hantavirus incident linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius to the United Kingdom for precautionary isolation.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) revealed that these individuals are from the British overseas territories of Saint Helena and Ascension Island. They have been in isolation and display no symptoms.

Health officials clarified that this transfer is a preventive measure aimed at mitigating any potential virus spread.

The hantavirus outbreak has been traced to the MV Hondius, a luxury expedition cruise ship which made stops at various remote islands while traversing the South Atlantic.

The cruise company’s website indicates that 32 passengers along with one crew member disembarked at Saint Helena, and two passengers were medically evacuated from Ascension Island.

Currently, the British government has not disclosed the identities of those being moved to the UK.

The UK Health Security Agency maintains that the broader public risk remains low, emphasizing ongoing contact tracing and health monitoring for those connected to the cruise.
