Turkmenistan has taken a significant leap in fostering digital innovation and scientific development with the inauguration of the UNESCO Chair on Digital Science at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences. This initiative underscores the nation’s commitment to modernizing its scientific and educational landscape through international partnerships.
The launch event, which took place on April 15, was attended by a diverse group of eminent scientists, educational leaders, policymakers, and emerging researchers. The ceremony also showcased an exhibition that highlighted innovative projects, digital transformation efforts, and notable scientific contributions from young talents, reflecting the country's dedication to promoting innovation.
Chynar Rustemova, Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO, addressed the gathering, stressing the value of global cooperation in enhancing digital technologies. She pointed out that nurturing strong connections with UNESCO is vital, particularly in realms like artificial intelligence, data science, and open knowledge systems.
Allaberdi Ashirov, President of the Academy of Sciences, commented on the historical relevance of the newly established chair, framing it as a key component of Turkmenistan’s long-term vision for integrating innovation into its developmental strategy. He emphasized that this initiative aims to connect scientific inquiry with practical applications across various sectors.
Durdymyrat Gadamov, Director of the International Science and Technology Park, further detailed that the new department will delve into advanced areas such as artificial intelligence, big data analysis, and geospatial technologies. These developments are anticipated to play a pivotal role in advancing resource management, boosting agricultural efficiency, and promoting sustainable economic development.
The department will be spearheaded by Nikolai Nikolayev, a seasoned expert in geoinformation systems and land management. His leadership is expected to enhance the department's research prowess and encourage international collaborations, particularly with global networks.
This chair is part of the UNESCO UNITWIN program, which links over 1,100 institutions across the globe and opens valuable avenues for young researchers. They will gain opportunities to be engaged in international research, access advanced knowledge systems, and contribute to global dialogues on the ethics of artificial intelligence and open science.
This initiative is poised to bolster Turkmenistan’s academic and scientific reputation on the international arena while empowering a younger generation of researchers. By merging technological advancements with international collaboration, the UNESCO Digital Science Chair is envisioned to emerge as a vital hub for future scientific advancements in the nation.
