UN Security Council Condemns UAE Nuclear Plant Drone Attack

UN Security Council Condemns UAE Nuclear Plant Drone Attack

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday strongly condemned the attack on the Barakah Nuclear Plant in the United Arab Emirates, calling it a serious violation of international law that endangered civilian lives, critical infrastructure, and the environment.

In an official statement, the Security Council demanded an immediate and permanent end to all attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure in the UAE. The Council also stressed that threats or attacks against peaceful nuclear facilities are unacceptable and pose major risks to regional and international security.

The Council said the attack challenged the core principles that protect international peace and stability. It added that those responsible for the attack, including groups operating through proxy networks, must be held accountable for their actions.

The Security Council also reaffirmed its support for the sovereignty, security, and regional stability of the United Arab Emirates.

Last week, the UAE announced that six drones were launched towards the country from Iraq. According to UAE authorities, one of the drones caused a fire at the Barakah Nuclear Plant, raising concerns over the safety of civilian nuclear facilities in the region.

The Barakah Nuclear Plant is one of the UAE’s most important energy projects and plays a major role in the country’s peaceful nuclear energy program.
