Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni has confirmed that he is battling prostate cancer and is undergoing treatment in China. This disclosure was made public via an official statement dated April 10, 2026.
The 72-year-old monarch learned of his condition during a routine health check in Beijing, where he was accompanied by his mother, Norodom Monineath, for their regular health assessments.
While the king acknowledged his diagnosis, he did not elaborate on the specifics of his health status. Specialists indicate that early detection of prostate cancer often results in successful treatment outcomes.
This news has sparked concern regarding the king’s health, despite his largely ceremonial role in governance. Under a constitutional monarchy, King Sihamoni serves mainly as a symbolic figurehead.
He ascended the throne in October 2004, succeeding his father, Norodom Sihanouk, who also received treatment for prostate cancer in China and lived to the age of 89.
Prior to his reign, King Sihamoni was Cambodia's ambassador to UNESCO and gained recognition for his career in classical ballet.
The royal family has not announced any significant changes to official duties, and observers note that the king prefers to keep a low public profile, remaining unmarried without direct heirs.
