A federal court in Washington DC has sentenced 22-year-old Evan Tangeman to 70 months in prison for his involvement in a significant cryptocurrency laundering operation. This case is associated with a global crime network allegedly spearheaded by Malone Lam.
Prosecutors characterized the operation as an intricate scheme that processed over $263 million in stolen digital assets. The network reportedly employed sophisticated social engineering tactics to infiltrate victims’ accounts and launder the proceeds through various means.
Court documents indicate that Tangeman confessed to being part of a racketeering conspiracy and laundering at least $3.5 million. Following his prison sentence, he will also undergo three years of supervised release.
Authorities highlighted Tangeman's pivotal role in converting stolen cryptocurrency into cash, which enabled lavish expenditures. The group is said to have spent funds on high-end properties in cities such as Los Angeles and Miami, along with luxury vehicles and extravagant lifestyle costs.
Investigators found that most members of the network were young individuals lacking legitimate income sources. Despite this, they managed to obtain expensive items, including Lamborghinis and Rolls-Royces, funded by illicit means.
Following the apprehension of several key players, including Lam and other conspirators, Tangeman attempted to hinder the investigation by directing associates to destroy digital evidence. Law enforcement subsequently confiscated several high-value assets linked to this case.
Officials stated that the network was active from 2023 to 2025, forming connections primarily through online platforms. This case underscores the increasing concerns surrounding cybercrime and the exploitation of cryptocurrency systems for unlawful financial activities.
