On Thursday, the US military executed strikes in Iran, focusing on a military site adjacent to the vital Strait of Hormuz, a US official confirmed.
This operation aimed to neutralize threats posed to American troops and commercial vessels operating in the area. The strike targeted a control station for drones in Bandar Abbas, believed to be in preparation for launching attacks.
Reports indicate that US forces intercepted four Iranian drones near the Strait of Hormuz. The site was preparing to launch an additional drone before being neutralized.
Locals in Bandar Abbas reported hearing three explosions around 1:30 a.m. local time, with air defense systems activated in response to the incident.
A US official characterized the strikes as “measured” and “purely defensive,” emphasizing that their intent was to uphold the ongoing ceasefire between the US and Iran established earlier this year.
This escalation occurred shortly after former President Donald Trump dismissed Iranian claims about a drafted agreement for normalizing shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian state media suggested a collaborative concept with Oman to manage shipping traffic while the US would ease restrictions on Iranian ports and decrease its military presence in the vicinity.
However, Trump refuted these claims, insisting that no single nation would exert control over the Strait, which he defined as international waters, warning against any attempts to dominate it.
Neither the White House nor the Omani embassy in Washington provided comments regarding the situation.
Earlier in the week, US forces had also targeted missile launch sites in southern Iran and boats allegedly deploying naval mines, which American officials described as defensive measures.
In response, Iranian officials reiterated their stance. Ebrahim Azizi, leading Iran's parliamentary security committee, asserted that US pressures wouldn’t compel Iran to abandon its objectives concerning uranium enrichment and sanctions relief.
These recent events underscore the persistent tensions between the US and Iran, despite discussions surrounding potential conflict reduction agreements in the region.
