The United States has reported the successful outcome of two days of negotiations between Lebanon and Israel that took place at the US Department of State, referring to the talks as “very productive.”
In a statement issued by the Department of State on Friday, it was shared that both nations have embraced a new negotiating framework dedicated to fostering enduring peace and stability between Lebanon and Israel. This framework emphasizes mutual respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and enhancing security along their common border.
The discussions reportedly made significant headway on the political front, with plans for additional discussions slated for June 2 and June 3.
In line with this agreement, Lebanon and Israel have also resolved to extend the cessation of hostilities originally set for April 16 for another 45 days. This extension aims to bolster security coordination and dialogue between the two nations.
The statement further noted that security discussions are set to commence later this month at the US Department of Defense, commonly referred to as the Pentagon. Military teams from both Lebanon and Israel are expected to attend under US guidance in efforts to enhance their coordination and communication.
Additionally, the United States expressed its apprehension regarding Hezbollah’s ongoing strikes against Israel, stressing that these actions were undertaken without the endorsement of the Lebanese government. Washington asserted that such actions jeopardize diplomatic efforts and could weaken the political dialogue.
In spite of these challenges, the US applauded the determination displayed by both Lebanon and Israel to pursue a long-term resolution. The statement also affirmed that Washington will persist in its support for both countries concerning political and security matters during the upcoming negotiation stage.
