High-ranking officials from Taiwan and the United States have recently convened to enhance their partnership in artificial intelligence (AI), advanced technology, and economic security. This collaboration, which has evolved since the Trump era, underscores the increasing strategic relationship between the two nations despite their lack of formal diplomatic recognition.
The discussions were spearheaded by Jacob Helberg, U.S. Under Secretary for Economic Affairs, alongside Taiwan’s Economy Minister Kung Ming-hsin, who is currently in the U.S. Significant agreements were sealed during the meetings, including the Pax Silica Declaration—a U.S. initiative aimed at safeguarding AI and semiconductor supply chains, along with a pact designed to bolster economic security.
Recognized as a vital player in semiconductor production essential for AI technologies, Taiwan is pivotal in advancing the AI revolution. The dialogue also touched upon security in supply chains, certification for drone components, and cooperation on critical minerals needed for technological advancement.
Discussions included initiatives to combat economic coercion, enhance collaborative efforts in third-party nations, and eliminate tax hurdles to encourage investment between the U.S. and Taiwan. The latter has long sought a bilateral agreement to prevent double taxation, which would greatly facilitate cross-border investments.
In addition to economic and technological ties, both nations emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait as crucial for global economic security. They also addressed securing undersea communication lines, advancing cooperation on low-Earth orbit satellites, and expanding training programs for high-tech talent.
Taiwan has recently accused China of meddling with undersea telecom and internet networks, a claim that Beijing refutes. In light of possible disruptions, Taiwan is enhancing its reliance on low-Earth orbit satellites to establish backup communication solutions if cables are damaged.
This fortified U.S.-Taiwan partnership signifies a strategic initiative to boost collaboration in key technological sectors and ensure infrastructure security amidst escalating geopolitical tensions.
