A political debate has emerged in Kerala following the recitation of the complete version of the national song, “Vande Mataram,” at the Congress-led UDF Cabinet's oath-taking ceremony. This incident has triggered a fierce discourse between Left parties and the BJP, both accusing one another of exploiting nationalism and secular values for political gain.
The CPIM expressed strong disapproval of the full rendition, arguing that it was unsuitable for a diverse and secular nation. They maintained that only the officially endorsed opening lines of “Vande Mataram” should be presented at state functions, as historically recognized by national leaders and the Constituent Assembly.
CPI leader Binoy Viswam emphasized that previous limitations on the national song were established to safeguard India’s secular ethos. He cautioned that certain parts of the song carry religious connotations that might conflict with the inclusive values championed by leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.
The controversy grew when the BJP accused Left parties of diminishing the significance of the national anthem to appease extremist factions. BJP Kerala president Rajeev Chandrasekhar criticized the Communists, asserting that Marxism has misunderstood Indian culture and traditions. He claimed that the Left's questioning of “Vande Mataram” reflects an ideology of appeasement.
Sources from the new Kerala government have distanced the administration from the uproar, clarifying that Lok Bhavan authorities managed the event arrangements. They insisted that there was no partisan motive behind the complete performance during the oath-taking ceremony.
Additionally, the CPIM noted that several BJP-led states refrain from performing the full version of “Vande Mataram” at government events. The party warned that such practices could undermine the secular fabric of the nation and foster unwarranted divisions within society.
This incident has sparked broader political conversations throughout Kerala, with discussions on social media and among political figures centering on nationalism, constitutional values, and the intersection of religion in public rituals. The fallout is anticipated to remain a significant topic in the political arena in the days ahead.
