V.D. Satheesan, the Chief Minister-designate of Kerala, has kicked off discussions aimed at assembling the new state government, following his official selection by the Congress leadership. Political engagement surged in Thiruvananthapuram on May 15, 2026, as high-ranking members of the United Democratic Front convened to strategize on the structure of the future Cabinet and the representation of allied parties.
During these talks, Satheesan met with former Chief Minister and current Opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan at his residence, capturing significant political attention as Kerala gears up for a new supervisory era following the recent Assembly election results.
After nearly ten days of uncertainty post-elections, the All India Congress Committee officially designated Satheesan as their choice for Chief Minister on May 14, concluding intense internal deliberations among top party officials vying for the role.
Senior Congress figure Ramesh Chennithala, who was also a strong candidate for the position, openly expressed his support for Satheesan. Party leaders described this unity as a vital move to strengthen the UDF coalition ahead of the government formation.
UDF representatives engaged in essential discussions concerning Cabinet roles and equitable representation for coalition partners. Anoop Jacob, leader of the Kerala Congress (Jacob), emphasized that UDF allies expect fair inclusion in the Cabinet, indicating that discussions about ministerial positions would be ongoing in leadership meetings.
Many Congress leaders commended Satheesan's leadership potential, expressing confidence in his administration. Senior leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan remarked that Satheesan possesses the vision and capability essential for effectively serving as Kerala's Chief Minister.
In a media address, Satheesan underscored the significance of safeguarding Kerala's secular character. He highlighted that the Assembly election outcomes mirrored public support for secular tenets and cautioned against divisive efforts in the state.
The Chief Minister-designate further stated that his administration would prioritize tackling the escalating cost of living and the economic strains attributed to rising fuel prices influenced by geopolitical tensions in West Asia. He pledged that his new government would strive to alleviate the financial burden on the public and enhance welfare initiatives throughout Kerala.
The UDF leadership is poised to finalize the Cabinet's broad framework shortly, as the coalition prepares to officially take office and embark on a new political chapter in Kerala.
