Vietnam Extends Zero Registration Fee for Electric Vehicles Until 2030

Post by : Shakul

Vietnam has taken a significant step to promote electric vehicle ownership by extending the 0% initial registration fee for battery-operated cars until December 31, 2030. This initiative aims to enhance the nation's shift toward eco-friendly transportation and mitigate environmental harm.

The new policy was established through Government Decree 202/2026/ND-CP, published on June 8, 2026. This decree revises existing registration laws and continues special provisions for electric vehicles, enabling buyers to register without incurring the initial fee.

Vietnamese officials assert that this extension is part of a comprehensive approach to encourage a transition from conventional gasoline vehicles to more sustainable options. The government anticipates that this measure will contribute to emission reductions, enhance air quality, and support the nation’s climate objectives.

Authorities noted that previous incentives from 2022 yielded favorable outcomes, enhancing consumer interest in electric vehicles, urging manufacturers to ramp up production, and bolstering the domestic electric vehicle sector.

According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance, the global electric vehicle market has experienced rapid growth, with worldwide sales exceeding 17 million units in 2024 and projected to surpass 20 million units in 2025, illustrating an increasing shift toward sustainable transportation.

Officials emphasized the significance of reducing financial burdens for consumers. Fee exemptions and tax incentives are common strategies employed globally to foster electric vehicle use and aid in the establishment of charging infrastructures.

This new decree is anticipated to instill long-term trust among consumers, manufacturers, and investors, while furthering Vietnam's green transportation objectives. Authorities are optimistic that this extension will be crucial in expediting the nation’s move toward cleaner mobility and realizing economic sustainability goals.
