Vietnam Commemorates 80 Soldiers Repatriated From Laos

Post by : Shakul

Vietnam observed a heartfelt memorial and burial ceremony in Nghe An province to pay tribute to 80 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts whose remains were repatriated from Laos after many years. This touching event was a testament to the nation’s profound respect and gratitude toward those who made the ultimate sacrifice during wartime missions in Laos.

The solemn occasion unfolded at the Nghi Loc Martyrs’ Cemetery, with attendees including high-ranking Vietnamese leaders, military representatives, provincial officials, and local citizens. Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra led the heartfelt tribute, offering incense in honor of the fallen heroes who devoted their lives to national liberation and solidarity.

Officials revealed that the recovery operation was part of a longstanding partnership between Vietnam and Laos focused on discovering and repatriating the remains of Vietnamese soldiers who perished aiding the Lao revolution during the tumultuous years. This initiative underscores the enduring historical ties shared by the two neighboring nations.

During the 2025-2026 dry season, the search and recovery unit from the Nghe An Provincial Military Command successfully gathered all 80 remains as designated by the mission. While the identities of these remains have yet to be confirmed, officials asserted that the mission met its comprehensive objectives.

Vietnamese authorities recognized the sacrifices made by the volunteer soldiers and experts who fought side by side with the Lao people during challenging wartime eras. Leaders emphasized that these heroic efforts helped reinforce the exceptional friendship and mutual support between Vietnam and Laos.

Expressions of gratitude were also extended to the Lao government and its communities for their unwavering support over the years in maintaining gravesites and aiding search teams in rugged terrains. The collaborative efforts of both nations have facilitated the recovery of thousands of remains over the last four decades.

To date, nearly 12,900 remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts have been retrieved from Laos, with numerous identities confirmed and returned to their communities. This ongoing effort continues to offer emotional closure to families who have awaited news of their loved ones for decades.

The burial ceremony concluded with a deeply emotional atmosphere as delegates, soldiers, and citizens laid flowers and offered incense at the graves. The return of these fallen heroes in May stands as a poignant reminder of sacrifice, patriotism, and the lasting bond between Vietnam and Laos.
