Vietnam is actively developing a robust “silver economy” aimed at harnessing the potential of its aging population. During a national gathering in Hanoi, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra highlighted the idea that older citizens should not only be recipients of social welfare but should also be seen as key players in the nation’s future advancement.
This conference commemorated the 85th anniversary of the Traditional Day of Vietnamese Elderly People and recognized the significant contributions of older citizens to various community and patriotic initiatives from 2016 to 2026. The Deputy Prime Minister praised the pivotal roles elderly individuals have played in shaping Vietnam through history, contributing to social growth and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Pham Thi Thanh Tra pointed out the dual challenge Vietnam faces with a rapidly aging population alongside transformations spurred by digital technologies, AI, and sustainable practices. She pressed for an evolution in elder care, promoting a model that blends protection and empowerment.
Statistics indicate that over nine million elderly Vietnamese remain actively engaged across various sectors, including labor, business, and community leadership. Their continued participation is vital for economic progress and local governance. The experience and wisdom of older citizens are invaluable national resources.
The Deputy Prime Minister urged ministries, local authorities, and organizations to speed up the development of products and services catering to an aging populace. She advocated for creating paths that allow seniors to work, mentor the young, share their expertise, and engage in business endeavors.
Additionally, Vietnam plans to enhance healthcare provisions, long-term care options, rehabilitation services, and community support for older individuals. The goal is to expand educational, cultural, and lifelong learning opportunities, thereby enriching both the material and spiritual lives of seniors nationwide.
Officials believe that fostering a strong silver economy will drive sustainable growth and elevate the quality of life for millions of older citizens. The conference also recognized and honored 169 exceptional senior citizens, awarding the Third-Class Labor Medal to the Central Office of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly for its noteworthy commitment to elderly welfare and development.
