Vietnam's Blueprint for Sustainable Oceans and Green Growth

Vietnam's Blueprint for Sustainable Oceans and Green Growth

Post by : Shakul

On World Environment Day and World Ocean Day, Vietnam's President To Lam emphasized the need for enhanced efforts at both national and global levels to safeguard the environment. He called for a robust green transformation and sustainability of oceans. In a policy piece, he underscored that environmental protection must become integral to economic development and national security.

To Lam acknowledged the pressing environmental issues confronting the globe, such as climate change, rising sea levels, biodiversity degradation, and marine pollution. He cautioned that reliance on resource-heavy developmental frameworks jeopardizes both economic stability and the ecological balance essential for human survival.

Vietnam is particularly susceptible to these challenges given its extensive coastline and populations residing in vulnerable coastal and delta areas. The government asserts that true sustainable growth hinges on weaving environmental safety into the fabric of economic planning.

The President reiterated Vietnam's pledge to attain net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, promote renewable energy, tackle plastic waste, enhance biodiversity, and foster a circular economy. He conveyed that green growth should be perceived not as an obligation but as a strategic goal crucial for the country's long-term prosperity and competitiveness.

A core aspect of this strategy is focused on cultivating a modern and sustainable maritime economy. Plans are in place to develop green seaports, renewable offshore energy projects, marine biotechnology, eco-tourism, and manage fisheries sustainably. Authorities also plan to bolster efforts against illegal fishing while nurturing marine ecosystems and supporting coastal community livelihoods.

The article emphasized the necessity of restoring forests, wetlands, and other vital ecosystems, alongside enhancing climate resilience in areas at risk. Investment in advanced environmental monitoring technologies, AI, digital mapping, and climate forecasting is anticipated to enhance governance and readiness against disasters.

Concluding his remarks, President To Lam urged for collective action from governments, businesses, and individuals. He implored every Vietnamese to engage in meaningful practices like tree planting, minimizing plastic use, conserving energy, safeguarding water, and adopting eco-friendly habits to foster a cleaner, safer, and sustainable future for the nation.
