Vietnam's government has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming several key universities in the Southeast region into prominent Asian institutions. This endeavor seeks to enhance the quality of higher education, boost global rankings, and support the nation’s long-term development agenda.
This initiative was a focal point during a high-level meeting led by Le Tien Chau, attended by various officials from ministries and universities, where they reviewed the progress and outlined the implementation roadmap.
According to the Ministry of Education and Training, three major universities have been highlighted for development: Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and the Vietnamese-German University. These were chosen for their academic strengths, independence, and international standing.
The government emphasizes that this enhancement plan will align with national strategies and educational policies, aiming to solidify the connection between education and industry demands—particularly in technology, finance, healthcare, and innovation sectors.
Deputy Prime Minister Le Tien Chau underscored the necessity for establishing clear objectives and measurable standards. He pointed out that universities need to specify their ranking aspirations based on globally acknowledged systems to maintain transparency and consistency.
The initiative revolves around three core pillars: funding, infrastructure, and policy backing. Authorities are focused on ensuring adequate financial resources are in place to provide institutions with the necessary support to meet their targets.
Vietnam's goal is to have at least eight universities ranked in the top 200 in Asia, with one institution aiming for the top 100 globally in particular fields by 2030. This initiative is projected to cultivate a highly skilled workforce and bolster Vietnam's standing in global education.
