On Sunday, Indian cricket maestro Virat Kohli reached a remarkable milestone, becoming the fastest athlete in history to accumulate 28,000 runs across all formats of international cricket. This achievement came during the first ODI against New Zealand, positioning him behind only Sachin Tendulkar on the all-time run-scorers list.
Kohli accomplished this feat in his 624th innings, striking a boundary off New Zealand's leg spinner, Adithya Ashok. For context, Tendulkar reached 28,000 runs in 644 innings, while Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara did so in 666 innings.
In reflecting upon his journey, Kohli described it as nothing short of a dream realized. He expressed his thankfulness for the opportunity to delight fans through his game. “I feel profoundly blessed to have this journey and the opportunity to bring happiness to my fans,” he remarked.
Kohli, celebrating his 45th player of the match title, contributed significantly with 93 runs off 91 balls, aiding India’s victory. He emphasized that his focus remains on the match’s context rather than personal achievements. “I concentrated on putting pressure on the opposition while leveraging my strengths,” he stated.
Regarding his role batting at number three, Kohli noted the need for aggressive play when called for, balanced with discipline. He commented that this approach has been crucial in forming effective partnerships and influencing match results.
Kohli also revealed that he sends his trophies to his mother in Gurgaon, who cherishes them. On the crowd's enthusiastic reaction when he came to the crease following Rohit Sharma’s wicket, he acknowledged their excitement while empathizing with the players exiting the pitch.
Indian captain Shubman Gill lauded Kohli's impressive form, noting, “These playing conditions are challenging, yet he makes it appear effortless. I hope he continues this run-scoring spree.” Kohli remarked that maintaining focus on each moment is vital for any athlete.
