Severe Weather Takes Center Stage as 2026 Unfolds in the US

Post by : Meena Hassan

The onset of 2026 has brought significant weather challenges throughout the United States, as torrential rain fell over Southern California during the iconic New Year’s Day festivities, while snow, fierce winds, and icy conditions disrupted events elsewhere.

Pasadena's renowned Rose Parade faced its first major rainfall in nearly 20 years, with steady downpours soaking marching bands, floral floats, and the large crowd along the six-mile route. Rainfall measured between one to two inches throughout the morning, with temperatures around 58°F (14°C) as the parade commenced at 8 a.m.

Despite the inclement weather, the parade proceeded with minimal alterations. Organizers shielded open-top vehicles carrying prominent figures and guests but welcomed large crowds who attended in person, while millions tuned in on television.

California's weather authorities issued flood watches and coastal flood advisories, particularly impacting areas still recovering from last year's severe wildfires near Los Angeles. Evacuation warnings were also put in place for residents due to concerns about potential flooding and debris flows from heavy rainfall.

On the other side of the country, New Year's celebrations were held in particularly frigid conditions. New York City's temperatures hovered close to freezing, marking one of the coldest New Year starts in nearly ten years. Attendees at outdoor festivities dressed warmly to combat the harsh winter weather.

Additionally, an Alberta clipper storm followed by an Arctic blast affected parts of the Midwest and Northeast. Snow squalls, strong winds, and shifting conditions impacted states like Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, and New England, making travel quite challenging.

Air travel also faced significant disruptions, with weather-induced delays affecting about one-quarter of flights leaving major airports in both San Diego and Boston, compounding the difficulties for travelers as the new year started.

From rain-soaked celebrations in California to winter's grip across the Midwest and Northeast, extreme weather dramatically shaped the first day of 2026 throughout the United States.
