The government of West Bengal has initiated a comprehensive re-verification of all caste certificates issued since 2011. This decision follows persistent claims regarding corruption and inconsistencies linked to the issuance of these certificates during the previous administration.
Senior officials reveal that the State Backward Classes Welfare Department has dispatched official communications to all district magistrates, instructing them to commence the verification process without delay. The focus will be on verifying the validity of the certificates issued over the last fifteen years.
Sources from the government report that this re-verification initiative is intended to uncover fraudulent or unlawfully obtained caste certificates that may have been utilized for obtaining government employment, educational placements, and welfare advantages designated for reserved categories.
District administrations are tasked with document verifications and conducting field investigations as necessary. The government anticipates establishing a comprehensive database to enhance transparency and prevent the misuse of reservation benefits moving forward.
Political responses have begun emerging in light of this announcement, with opposition members calling for strict measures against those who issued counterfeit certificates, while some political parties have raised questions regarding the timing of this initiative.
The state government has asserted that this verification effort is crucial to safeguarding the rights of authentic beneficiaries from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. Officials have stated that the process will adhere to existing legal and administrative protocols.
Authorities have also assured that legitimate certificate holders need not worry, as the primary objective of this initiative is to detect irregularities while ensuring a fair application of reservation policies across the state.
The re-verification procedure is anticipated to continue over the next few months, with district administrations expected to provide regular updates to the Backward Classes Welfare Department concerning the investigation's progress.
