World Bank Allocates $225 Million for Water and Health Support in Syria

Post by : Bianca Haleem

An allocation of $225 million has been sanctioned by the World Bank to bolster public services in Syria, with a primary focus on the water and health sectors. This funding is sourced from the International Development Association (IDA).

This financial assistance is directed towards two pivotal initiatives. The first is the Syria Emergency Water Security and Resilient Services Project, which has been granted $150 million. Its central objective is to rehabilitate water supply systems and wastewater infrastructure in high-density areas experiencing service interruptions.

The second initiative, titled the Syria Health System Recovery and Strengthening Project, is receiving $75 million. This project is designed to enhance access to quality healthcare and bolster Syria's public health system.

Collectively, these initiatives aim to impact approximately 4.5 million individuals throughout Syria. The emphasis is placed on ensuring dependable access to clean water, sanitation, and upgraded healthcare services.

Jean-Christophe Carret highlighted that reviving infrastructure and reinstating crucial services are fundamental to Syria's recovery. He further noted that advancing public services will enhance living standards, foster social stability, and facilitate the return of refugees and internally displaced persons.

This funding is a significant milestone in Syria’s ongoing journey toward recovery and stabilization, addressing urgent needs in essential services.
