Actor Margot Robbie said the emotional depth of Emerald Fennell’s upcoming film adaptation of Emily Bronte’s 1847 novel “Wuthering Heights” may surprise audiences. Robbie shared her thoughts at the film’s rain-soaked London premiere on Thursday.
The movie follows the intense and troubled love story of Catherine “Cathy” Earnshaw and Heathcliff, played by Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.
The story begins when Cathy’s unstable father brings Heathcliff, an orphan, to their home on the misty Yorkshire Moors after returning from his travels. Cathy and Heathcliff form a strong bond from a young age and promise to stay together forever. However, their relationship slowly breaks apart due to anger, misunderstandings, and the strict social rules of that time. This leads to painful and toxic consequences for both of them.
Newcomer Charlotte Mellington and Adolescence star Owen Cooper play the younger versions of Cathy and Heathcliff.
Speaking on the red carpet, Robbie called the film “heart-wrenching but beautiful,” adding that it leaves viewers with a full emotional feeling.
Jacob Elordi described working on the film as “the greatest journey” and said his version of Heathcliff was shaped by Emerald Fennell’s vision. He added that he tried to play the character as truthfully as possible while staying fully committed to the director’s approach. Elordi previously worked with Fennell in her 2023 film Saltburn.
Actress Alison Oliver, who plays Isabella Linton, said the film is a character-driven look at human nature. She also revealed that the movie includes moments not found in the original novel, especially regarding the intimacy between Cathy and Heathcliff. Oliver said Fennell explores the darker side of love, obsession, and emotional intensity.
The film is being released by Warner Bros, and it also features original songs by pop star Charli XCX. The movie will release internationally from February 11.
