Over the past five years, a significant number of Malaysians have opted to renounce their citizenship, primarily relocating to Singapore. According to official data, 61,116 Malaysians gave up their citizenship, with nearly 57,314—approximately 94 percent—becoming Singaporean citizens. Other destinations such as Australia and Brunei saw markedly fewer departures.
On average, 10,000 Malaysians renounced their citizenship annually. Women were more likely than men to make this decision, with 35,356 women having done so over the five-year span.
This phenomenon is particularly pronounced among younger adults. Individuals aged 31 to 40 comprised the largest demographic at 31.6 percent, followed by those aged 21 to 30 at 30.8 percent.
Economic factors heavily influenced this migration. Many Malaysians secured jobs in Singapore, where employment opportunities and salaries are more attractive, facilitating their citizenship applications. Family ties also play a role, particularly for those marrying foreign nationals and relocating with their spouses.
Additionally, some Malaysians face revocation of their citizenship upon acquiring a foreign nationality, as Malaysia prohibits dual citizenship.
This scenario underscores the pressing issue of brain drain Malaysia is experiencing. Over the last five decades, around 1.86 million Malaysians have emigrated—about 5.6 percent of the population—exceeding the global average.
In response, the government has initiated programs aimed at retaining talent domestically and enticing Malaysians abroad to return. Initiatives like 'Malaysia at Heart' foster connections with citizens overseas, while tax incentives and special schemes aim to draw skilled professionals back home.
These measures have yielded some positive outcomes, with numerous professionals choosing to return to Malaysia, indicating a shift from permanent emigration to a more dynamic exchange of talent.
