Thailand is advancing its railway modernization initiative, focusing on safety enhancements and upgraded services, following a visit by Deputy Minister of Transport Siripong Angkasakulkiat to the State Railway of Thailand Electrified Train Company Limited. The visit aimed to review ongoing operations and set new policy guidelines.
The Deputy Minister's engagement took place at Bangkok Central Station, where he met with executives and staff from the Red Line electric train service. The government reiterated its commitment to creating an efficient, safe, and modern transport system to bolster future economic growth.
During discussions, Siripong praised the government’s flat-rate travel initiative, which enables passengers to utilize EMV contactless bank cards for economical train journeys. This initiative has seen a remarkable 106 percent increase in public adoption since its launch in December 2025.
The Ministry of Transport has directed the State Railway of Thailand to collaborate with Krung Thai Bank to expand the deployment of EMV access gates at stations as passenger numbers continue to rise. The government aims for the Red Line system to serve as a benchmark for modern public transport across Thailand.
Siripong also highlighted the necessity for heightened operational safety standards, improved service quality, and the integration of innovative technologies. He emphasized that rail travel is vital for alleviating traffic congestion, reducing air pollution, and advancing Thailand's net-zero emissions goal by 2050.
To enhance service levels, SRT Electrified Rail Company announced a new campaign—“Year of Omotenashi Service”—focusing on passenger hospitality, equitable service, and adherence to international safety standards. Additionally, plans to improve feeder transport systems connecting Red Line stations with neighbouring areas using EV buses and diesel railcar services are in place.
Moreover, the railway operator is set to roll out a smart monitoring system as part of “The Smart Railway Ecosystem.” In collaboration with King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, this initiative involves incorporating embedded technology within trains to monitor track and electrical systems in real time, thereby improving maintenance practices.
Officials have indicated that further updates on safety improvements, passenger service enhancements, and operational efficiencies will be reported as Thailand endeavors to establish a faster, cleaner, and more reliable rail network for its citizens.
