Sharjah Narrator Forum Shows How Heritage Meets Modern Technology

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, stressed that adapting to rapid developments is essential to safeguard cultural heritage and pass it on to future generations. He emphasised the need to balance authenticity with modern technology to reach wider audiences effectively.

Influence Of Social Media

Dr. Al Musallam noted that social media influencers now hold powerful and persuasive voices. This makes it crucial for authentic storytellers to integrate technology strategically, ensuring heritage remains relevant and engaging in the digital age.

Dialogue Session Highlights

The remarks came during a dialogue session titled “The Narrator in His Silver Jubilee: From Local to Global.” The session included Dr. Aisha Al Hassan Al Shamsi, Director of the Arab Heritage Centre, and was moderated by Professor Hind Khalifat. It attracted intellectuals, researchers, students, and folk narrative enthusiasts.

Forum’s 25-Year Legacy

Dr. Al Musallam highlighted that since its inception 25 years ago, the forum has acted as a bridge between cultures. Initially focused on storytellers from the Gulf and Arab regions, it now attracts participants from across the world. The forum has become a pioneering platform for preserving intangible cultural heritage.

Sharjah’s Commitment To Culture

He underlined Sharjah’s dedication to documenting narratives, calling culture and heritage a central pillar of the emirate’s international reputation. The forum supports research, publication, and education in storytelling to maintain the richness of local heritage.

Challenges In The Digital Era

Addressing modern challenges, Dr. Al Musallam observed that some content creators gain large audiences despite lacking credibility, while authentic narrators struggle to use digital tools effectively. He warned that popular memory could fade unless stories are presented in renewed and engaging formats, urging partnerships and strategic use of technology.

Research And Documentation Efforts

Dr. Al Musallam explained that the forum now functions as a comprehensive research and documentation project. It produces academic publications, encyclopedias of stories and storytellers, and hosts workshops and training programmes to cultivate a new generation of narrators.

Supporting Local Storytellers

The forum contributes to UNESCO dialogues on intangible heritage and provides local storytellers with support, including social care and housing. These efforts recognize the cultural role of narrators and reinforce their value to society.

Women In Storytelling

Dr. Al Shamsi emphasised that storytelling is a creative pursuit for all, not limited by gender. She noted that women today can travel, document experiences, and share stories using modern tools. She highlighted the universal nature of folk tales, with similar stories appearing across cultures, such as “Cinderella.”

Importance Of Translation

Dr. Aisha stressed the significance of translation in spreading folk narratives globally. She highlighted that translations must be handled by those passionate about heritage to preserve the essence and soul of the original stories.

Storytelling In Education

The forum has actively introduced storytelling into schools and educational settings. Some narrators visit classrooms to share stories with students, creating a direct connection between youth and their cultural roots, enhancing understanding and appreciation of local traditions.

Future Directions And AI Integration

Dr. Al Shamsi discussed the potential of using artificial intelligence to archive and analyse stories. She suggested incorporating elements like science fiction to appeal to younger audiences, while emphasising that authentic storytelling traditions should remain at the core.

Preserving And Promoting Heritage

The 25th Sharjah International Narrator Forum highlights the balance between tradition and innovation. By combining research, education, modern technology, and global exchange, the forum ensures that heritage remains a living, evolving part of contemporary culture.
