Pakistan Hit by 4.5 Magnitude Earthquake, Tremors Felt

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Pakistan early on Saturday, raising concerns among residents and seismologists about increased activity in the region. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) confirmed that the quake was recorded at 01:59 am IST, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface. Such shallow quakes, even with moderate strength, can cause stronger surface tremors, which explains why many people felt it clearly.

Epicenter and Technical Details

According to the NCS, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at latitude 28.30 N and longitude 65.25 E inside Pakistan. At 10 kilometers deep, this quake is classified as shallow. Seismologists explained that shallow quakes tend to be felt more strongly than deeper ones, even if their magnitude is not very high. Fortunately, this one did not cause any serious damage or injuries.

Recent Tremors in Karachi

Just three days earlier, another earthquake had struck Karachi. On October 2, 2025, a 3.2 magnitude quake was recorded seven kilometers northwest of Malir at around 09:34 am. This quake also had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Residents in parts of Karachi reported mild shaking of windows and furniture, which created panic in some neighborhoods.

No Major Damage or Casualties Reported

Authorities confirmed that neither the 4.5 magnitude earthquake nor the earlier 3.2 quake caused significant damage to life or property. Emergency teams remained alert, but no serious reports came from the affected areas. Despite this, people living near Karachi and Malir expressed fear over the close timing of two earthquakes within the same week.

Safety Advisories Issued by Authorities

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) urged citizens to remain alert and follow basic earthquake safety measures. People were advised to move to open spaces during tremors, stay away from tall buildings, and avoid using elevators. Emergency services have been placed on standby to act quickly if stronger aftershocks or new tremors occur.

Pakistan’s Seismic Vulnerability

Pakistan is situated on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it one of the most earthquake-prone regions in South Asia. The country has a history of devastating earthquakes, the most tragic being the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, which killed tens of thousands and destroyed infrastructure. Events like Saturday’s tremor are reminders that the region remains vulnerable to sudden seismic activity.

Public Response to the Tremors

In Karachi and Malir, residents reported moments of fear as the tremors shook their homes. Many rushed outdoors for safety, while others took to social media to share their experiences. Posts about shaking furniture, rattling windows, and the fear of aftershocks flooded online platforms. Citizens also reminded one another about safety steps to take in such emergencies.

Importance of Preparedness

Experts believe that while the recent earthquakes were moderate, they serve as an important warning. Seismologists emphasize the need for strong disaster preparedness systems, better infrastructure planning, and regular awareness campaigns for citizens. Preparedness, they say, can save countless lives in the event of a larger earthquake in the future.

Monitoring Continues Across the Region

Authorities and seismologists continue to closely monitor seismic activity in the region. Although no damage was reported this time, experts caution that the frequency of tremors is a reminder of Pakistan’s constant exposure to earthquake risks. Emergency drills and awareness programs are likely to be reinforced in the coming weeks.

While Saturday’s 4.5 magnitude earthquake caused no reported destruction, its shallow depth and closeness to Karachi have left people unsettled. Coming just days after another quake in Malir, the tremors highlight the fragile balance of living in a seismic zone. The event serves as a reminder of the importance of safety awareness, preparedness, and stronger infrastructure to reduce risks in the future.
