Abhishek Sharma has reached a big milestone in his cricket career. The 24-year-old left-handed batter from India has become the number one batter in the world in T20 International (T20I) cricket. This is a special achievement, as only two other Indian players have reached this spot before him—Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav. Abhishek has now joined this elite group by taking the top position in the latest ICC T20I batting rankings.
Abhishek Dethrones Travis Head
Abhishek Sharma took the number one spot from Australia’s Travis Head. Head had been at the top for more than a year after passing Suryakumar Yadav during the 2024 T20 World Cup. However, he missed Australia’s recent matches in the Caribbean. This gave Abhishek the opportunity to rise to the top, thanks to his strong performances in recent games.
From Zimbabwe Century to T20I Consistency
Abhishek made a strong start to his international career. He scored a powerful century in a T20I match against Zimbabwe last year. But more than just one big performance, it is his regular and steady performances that helped him climb to the number one position. He has shown excellent form with the bat and has become a key player in India’s T20 team.
Abhishek Shines Against England
One of Abhishek's most memorable moments came during a T20I match against England at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai earlier this year. In that match, he scored a century and celebrated in style. This performance proved that he could perform well against strong teams in important matches.
Other Indian Batters in T20I Rankings
Abhishek is not the only Indian batter doing well in the T20I rankings. Tilak Varma remains in third place, showing that India has more young talent coming up in the shortest format of the game. Captain Suryakumar Yadav, who was once number one, is currently in sixth place.
A Good Week for Indian Test Stars
While Abhishek grabbed headlines in T20Is, Indian players in Test cricket also had a good week. The Indian team played a strong Test match in Manchester against England. They batted for five sessions and were able to secure a draw. This match also helped some Indian players move up in the ICC Test rankings.
Rishabh Pant Moves Up in Test Rankings
Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who is still recovering from an injury, moved up one place in the ICC Test batting rankings. He is now in seventh place. Pant scored a brave half-century in the match, showing his determination and skill, even though he is still not fully fit.
Ravindra Jadeja Reaches Career-Best Rating
All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also had a great performance. He scored an unbeaten century in the second innings of the Manchester Test. This helped him jump five places in the Test batting rankings. He is now in 29th place, his best-ever position as a Test batter.
Jasprit Bumrah Stays No.1 in Test Bowling
Among bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah continues to be the number one Test bowler in the world. He has held this position for a long time, thanks to his deadly pace, accuracy, and match-winning performances. Bumrah is a key player in India’s Test team and is feared by batters all around the world.
Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal Rankings Update
Shubman Gill played well in the second innings of the Manchester Test and scored a century. He remains in ninth place in the Test batting rankings. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped three places and is now in eighth position. Both are young players with bright futures in Indian cricket.
England Players Also Make Gains
Some English players also improved their rankings after the Manchester Test. Ben Stokes had a good match and moved up eight places in the Test batting rankings. He is now jointly in 34th place. He also climbed to third place among Test all-rounders. Joe Root, one of England’s best batters, played a brilliant innings of 150 runs. This helped him stay at the top of the Test batting rankings.
Joe Root Passes Ricky Ponting
With his 150-run innings, Joe Root also crossed a major milestone. He has now scored more runs in Test cricket than Australian legend Ricky Ponting. This makes Root the second-highest run-scorer in the history of Test cricket. Only one player is ahead of him now.
Ben Duckett Returns to Top 10
Another English player, Ben Duckett, had a strong performance with the bat. He scored 94 runs at Old Trafford and jumped five places in the rankings. He is now back in the top 10 of the Test batting rankings.
A Bright Future for Indian Cricket
The rise of Abhishek Sharma and the strong performances by other Indian players in both T20 and Test formats show that Indian cricket has a bright future. Young players are stepping up and performing well on big stages. Whether it’s in fast-paced T20 matches or long Test matches, Indian cricketers are proving their talent and determination.
New Stars and New Records
Abhishek Sharma’s rise to the top of the T20I batting rankings is a proud moment for India. It also marks a new chapter in Indian cricket, where young players are breaking records and reaching new heights. With players like Abhishek, Tilak Varma, and Shubman Gill leading the way, the future of Indian cricket looks strong and exciting. At the same time, experienced players like Bumrah, Pant, and Jadeja continue to show their value. This balance of youth and experience is helping India perform well across all formats of the game.
