His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, officially opened the 31st Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival. The festival is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is the Chairman of the Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.

The festival is an important international event in Abu Dhabi, attracting chess players, organizers, and sports enthusiasts from all over the world. The opening ceremony marked the start of a lively tournament with a strong atmosphere, highlighting the UAE’s commitment to supporting sports and intellectual competitions.

AI Used to Launch the Festival

His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan launched the festival using artificial intelligence technology. This innovative start highlighted the UAE’s use of modern tools to enhance sports and events.

The opening was attended by Taryam Matar Taryam, President of the UAE Chess Federation, and Hussein Abdullah Al Khouri, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Chess and Mind Games Club. Both officials guided the minister through the festival’s activities and competitions. This high-tech approach shows how the UAE combines tradition with modern innovation in organizing global sports events.

Participation from Around the World

Nearly 3,000 male and female players from 82 countries participated in this year’s festival. This includes players from Gulf and Arab countries as well as international participants. The large turnout reflects the growing popularity of chess and mind games in the UAE and around the world.

The opening ceremony also hosted several officials from Arab and Gulf sports federations. Notable attendees included Dr. Ismail Ibrahim Al Khouri, Assistant Secretary General of the Asian Football Confederation; Mohammed bin Mutlaq Al Masoudi, President of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation; and Hamad Al Tamimi, Executive Director of the Qatari Football Federation. Representatives from Kuwait, Sharjah, and other regional federations were also present.

UAE Leadership Supports Sporting Excellence

Hussein Abdullah Al Khouri, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Chess and Mind Games Club, expressed gratitude to His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan for attending and sponsoring the event. He highlighted that the UAE, with the support of its wise leadership, continues to develop its global reputation in hosting high-level sporting events.

He emphasized that the festival allows Emiratis and other participants to interact with elite international players, which helps in enhancing competitive skills and building sportsmanship. This festival also reflects the UAE’s long-term commitment to supporting both sports and intellectual competitions at a world-class level.

Abu Dhabi Sports Council’s Role

The festival is supervised by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, which has played a key role in its success over the years. The council provides support, resources, and coordination to ensure smooth execution of the tournaments.

Tournament Details and Duration

The 31st Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival will run from August 15 to 24. Competitions are being held at the Radisson Blu and St. Regis hotels in Abu Dhabi.

The festival includes 27 tournaments for various age groups and skill levels. It features the prestigious Masters Championship, along with competitions for juniors, seniors, and amateur players. The total prize money for all competitions amounts to half a million dirhams, showing the event’s importance and support for competitive chess.

Introduction of New Mind Games

This edition of the festival also introduces three new mental competitions: Checkers, Dominoes, and Random Chess. These additions broaden the festival’s appeal and encourage participants to develop multiple mental skills.

The new competitions aim to attract both chess players and enthusiasts of other mind games. They provide participants with opportunities to learn, compete, and enjoy different strategic challenges in a professional and organized environment.
