Abu Dhabi Introduces New Framework for Novel Foods Innovation

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Abu Dhabi is enhancing its role in the global food sector by instituting a new initiative aimed at regulating novel foods. This strategic effort seeks to fortify sustainable food security while attracting significant investments in the industry. The initiative is a joint effort involving the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA), the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC), and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO).

The newly introduced initiative focuses on crafting a contemporary, science-based framework for innovative food technologies, which encompass alternative proteins, cultivated foods, and precision fermentation methods. By optimizing regulatory pathways, Abu Dhabi seeks to emerge as a competitive center for advanced food technologies and biotechnological solutions.

As part of this initiative, the registration process for novel foods has been streamlined, effectively cutting down approval timelines by 6 to 9 months. Additionally, the new framework will consolidate halal certification, production permissions, and import permits into a singular system, thereby facilitating quicker market access while ensuring a unified national standard. A comprehensive database of authorized food products along with detailed technical guidelines will enhance transparency for all stakeholders involved.

This strategy adheres to international best practices, leveraging standards from the UAE, GCC, EU, Singapore, and the US. It will implement a science-based risk assessment methodology that scrutinizes products based on the technology involved and its developmental stage. The halal certification protocols will also receive updates to reflect contemporary advancements, thereby boosting the UAE's competitive edge in the halal food export sector.

This initiative underscores Abu Dhabi's larger vision presented in the UAE National Food Security Strategy 2051, which aspires to cultivate a resilient, sustainable, and technologically-advanced food ecosystem. By incorporating cutting-edge agricultural methods and fostering an attractive investment climate, this initiative bolsters Abu Dhabi's image as a pioneer in innovative food solutions.

The collaborative nature of this initiative showcases an integrated effort among regulatory entities, investment bodies, and scientific institutions, paving the way for a safe and sustainable food industry that is ready for the future. With clear processes, expedited approvals, and global alignment, Abu Dhabi aims to set a standard for food innovation on an international scale, while simultaneously driving economic growth and securing food stability for the UAE.
