GOTF Abu Dhabi 2025 Begins Era of Phygital Sports

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, the Games of the Future (GOTF) Abu Dhabi 2025, sponsored by ADNOC, is set to run from 18–23 December at ADNEC Centre. The event will commence with an opening ceremony on 17 December, presenting a remarkable exhibition of hybrid sports that merge physical prowess with digital expertise under the theme: Next Gen Human. Play the Future.

Understanding Phygital Sports

Phygital sports create a fusion between classical athletic events and digital gaming in one seamless format. Competitors engage in virtual rounds before clashing in real-world venues. The cumulative scores from both arenas decide the champions, showcasing the dynamic interplay of technology and traditional sports.

This year, over 850 competitors from 60 nations—ranging from champion teams to emerging talents—will compete across 11 disciplines, featuring one of the most varied and competitive line-ups to date.

Expert Takeaways

His Excellency Faisal Al Bannai, Advisor to the UAE President and Secretary General of the ATRC, remarked:
"Phygital sport transcends mere competition; it embodies a mindset for the youth of today. Abu Dhabi is honored to lead this movement, fostering innovation and community around future technologies."

Nis Hatt, CEO of Phygital International, shared:
"The Games of the Future establishes a global standard in phygital sports, integrating fair competition with innovative play across physical and digital realms."

Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE, emphasized the event's significance:
"Through the use of digital platforms, immersive gaming, and real-time data, we are transforming global competition and enhancing fan interactions."

Prize Structure & Competition Format

The draw ceremony has officially announced matchups for the group stages in most disciplines. Teams will vie for progression towards a total awarded prize of US$5 million, with fans eagerly tracking the thrilling narratives that unfold during the games.

Phygital Sports Summit

Coinciding with the event, Abu Dhabi will host the Phygital Sports Summit on 17 December. This thought leadership forum will delve into the evolution of hybrid sports, with discussions led by experts, athletes, innovators, and policymakers on topics like human–AI collaboration, youth engagement, athlete wellness, and the future legacy of phygital competition.

The summit will include keynotes, panels, and intimate discussions, led by Amy Jane Gillingham, Mohammed Al Hosani, and Sabine Sassine. Notable guests will comprise:

  • His Excellency Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, UAE Minister of Sports

  • President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan

  • Ministers from Bahrain and Türkiye

The Games of the Future Abu Dhabi 2025 is being coordinated by ASPIRE, in partnership with Ethara and Phygital International. Key supporters are the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and the UAE Ministry of Sports.
