Wildlife Officials Request Action Against Invasive Tegu Lizards

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Invasive Argentine black and white tegu lizards are on the rise across various southern states in the United States, prompting wildlife authorities to call on local residents to kill and report these reptiles. Their growth is endangering local ecosystems.

Particularly in southeastern Georgia, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has issued a plea for community action. This non-native species poses a significant threat to both wildlife and the environment.

According to DNR senior wildlife biologist Daniel Sollenberger, those who cannot safely euthanize the animals should document and report their sightings to local authorities. This could lead to assistance in capturing and removing the tegu lizards.

Recognized scientifically as Salvator merianae, Argentine black and white tegus originate from South America and have infiltrated the U.S. via the exotic pet trade. They have formed wild populations in states like Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

These lizards can reach a length of four feet and exhibit a remarkable adaptability to various environments. Experts warn that tegus can negatively impact native wildlife by consuming eggs and smaller animals, including ground-nesting birds, and they are capable of damaging crops and private properties.

Moreover, there are concerns that these reptiles could introduce harmful pathogens such as Salmonella, which poses health risks to both humans and animals.

To combat this issue, state wildlife agencies are implementing control and removal initiatives. Trapping operations are already active in areas with confirmed tegu sightings.

Experts emphasize the importance of rapid intervention to prevent the invasive lizards from spreading further. Without effective management, their populations could surge, leading to enduring ecological repercussions.

Authorities remain committed to encouraging residents to report any sightings, thereby aiding in the protection of local wildlife and preserving ecological balance in impacted regions.
