Afghanistan has withdrawn from the upcoming T20 tri-series with Pakistan and Sri Lanka following the death of three local Afghan cricketers in a cross-border attack in Urgun district, Paktika province.
The tri-series was arranged by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and was scheduled to take place from November 17 to 29 in Rawalpindi and Lahore. Afghanistan was set to play Pakistan twice, on November 17 and November 23, along with matches against Sri Lanka. This would have been the first time Afghanistan played Pakistan on Pakistani soil, though they had participated in Pakistan-hosted tournaments like the 2023 Asia Cup and the Champions Trophy without facing the host team.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) stated that several lives were lost in the attack, including the three cricketers returning home after a friendly match in Sharana, the capital of Paktika.
The ACB described the event as a "tragic incident" and said it decided to withdraw from the tri-series as a mark of respect to the victims. The board also called it a great loss for Afghanistan’s sports community, athletes, and the cricket family.
The planned tri-series was the second involving Afghanistan and Pakistan this year, following their meeting in August before the Asia Cup. However, deteriorating diplomatic relations between the two nations added tension to the tournament arrangements.
The PCB has not yet commented on Afghanistan’s withdrawal or how it will affect the schedule of matches with Sri Lanka. Cricket fans and authorities in both countries are waiting for further updates.
The attack and the resulting deaths have had a significant impact on Afghan cricket, highlighting security concerns and the challenges of organizing sports events in a tense political and border environment.
Despite the withdrawal, Afghanistan continues to support its cricketing talent and aims to honor the victims while ensuring the safety of its players in international competitions.
This incident also reflects the broader regional instability affecting sports diplomacy, showing how political and security issues can directly influence international sporting events.
