Arab Parliament Denounces Israeli Draft Laws on West Bank

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yammahi, President of the Arab Parliament, has condemned the Israeli Knesset for its recent endorsement of two draft laws aimed at asserting what Israel characterizes as “sovereignty” over the West Bank and one of its unlawful settlements. Al Yammahi labeled these actions a blatant breach of international law and a grave danger to regional stability. The Arab Parliament firmly opposes any moves to annex Palestinian lands through legislative means.

In his remarks, Al Yammahi underscored that these draft laws represent a legislative transgression and a serious violation of established international law, including UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which identifies Israeli settlements in occupied territories as illegal. He pointed out that such actions jeopardize long-standing international consensus on Palestinian rights and signify an aggressive push to annex Palestinian territories, thus threatening ongoing peace initiatives in the region.

The Arab Parliament President cautioned that unilateral actions hinder the potential for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. By claiming sovereignty over occupied territories, Israel diminishes any remaining avenues for negotiation and dialogue. Al Yammahi reiterated that lasting peace can only be achieved through adherence to international law, justice, and the safeguarding of Palestinian rights—not through unlawful annexation.

Al Yammahi expressed concern over the international community's muted response to this issue, warning that inaction might embolden Israel to further expand its settlements and violate global norms. He called upon governments, parliaments, and international organizations to take swift and decisive measures to counter this legislative assault. He emphasized the necessity for coordinated diplomatic actions to avert further escalation and to uphold the rights of the Palestinian populace.

Reiterating his previous statement, Al Yammahi demanded the suspension of the Israeli Knesset’s membership in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) due to ongoing violations of international law and human rights. He noted that allowing Israel to maintain its membership while enacting such laws undermines the integrity of international parliamentary bodies and conveys a troubling message regarding accountability and justice.

Al Yammahi reaffirmed the Arab Parliament’s unwavering commitment to Palestinian sovereignty and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. He reiterated that the Parliament will steadfastly advocate for Palestinian rights on all international platforms and will collaborate with Arab and regional partners to confront breaches of international law.

The Arab Parliament President concluded with a call to the global and regional community to urgently intervene against Israel’s illicit actions. He urged a unified approach by Arab parliaments and international organizations to annul these measures, uphold international law, and protect the peace process. Al Yammahi’s statement underscores the Arab Parliament’s dedication to justice, accountability, and the defense of Palestinian rights.
