Shreyas Iyer in ICU in Sydney After Rib Injury During Third ODI

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at a Sydney hospital after suffering internal bleeding from a rib cage injury during the third ODI against Australia. The injury followed a spectacular backward-running catch to dismiss Alex Carey — a match-defining moment that left the batter badly hurt.

Sources say Iyer experienced severe pain shortly after returning to the dressing room and his vital signs became unstable, prompting the BCCI medical team to arrange urgent hospital transfer. Imaging confirmed internal bleeding and he was placed under intensive observation in the ICU. Medical staff warned the condition might have become life‑threatening without timely intervention.

A team insider commented, "He has been in the ICU for the last couple of days. The doctors detected the bleeding quickly and acted fast. He's stable now, but it was a serious situation. He's resilient and expected to recover." The BCCI medical unit is maintaining regular communication with treating physicians in Sydney to ensure comprehensive care.

Initial estimates had suggested a recovery period of around three weeks, but clinicians now indicate the timeline could extend given the severity of the internal bleeding. Full recuperation will be necessary before any return to competitive cricket, with priority on complete healing.

Reports indicate Iyer will remain under observation in Sydney for at least a week before being cleared to travel back to India. He is not included in the current T20 squad, allowing him time to rest and recover. Supporters worldwide have posted messages of encouragement and best wishes on social media.

The incident has prompted concern across the cricket community, with colleagues and fans praising Iyer's bravery on the field. The episode underscores how quickly moments of sporting heroism can carry serious physical risks. For now, Shreyas Iyer’s attention is on recovery as he battles through this difficult spell.
