Dubai – Filipino tennis prodigy Alex Eala is gearing up for an exciting 2026 season, following her outstanding campaign in 2025, where she broke into the WTA Top 50. The talented 20-year-old will kick off her year at the ASB Classic in Auckland this January, looking to solidify her place among the tennis elite.
Eala recently had the honor of being a flag-bearer for the Philippines during the grand opening ceremony of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, sharing this special moment with volleyball star Bryan Bagunas at Rajamangala Stadium. “It was an incredible experience and a great privilege to represent our nation,” Eala expressed.
Ranking at No. 52, Eala is positioned as the fourth seed for the WTA 250 event in Auckland, which features top players like world No. 14 Elina Svitolina, along with Emma Navarro (15), Iva Jovic (35), and Janice Tjen (53). Noteworthy tennis figures such as Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens will also participate through wildcards, in addition to Britain’s Katie Boulter.
The defending champion, Clara Tauson, will miss Auckland to compete in Brisbane, while Naomi Osaka, the 2025 runner-up, is anticipated to play in the United Cup. For Eala, this seeded placement marks a pivotal moment in her career, showcasing her impressive advancement from No. 147 in 2024, where she mostly participated in lower-level competitions.
