Amazon Plans to Lay Off 16,000 Employees Amid AI Progress

Amazon Plans to Lay Off 16,000 Employees Amid AI Progress

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Amazon has revealed plans to cut approximately 16,000 jobs globally, continuing its restructuring efforts that commenced last October. This current wave of layoffs will bring the total number of corporate job reductions to around 30,000.

These layoffs aim to enhance operational efficiency by simplifying processes, trimming down management layers, and adapting to the growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within the company. After a period of vigorous hiring during the pandemic, Amazon is now realigning its workforce to meet current demands.

The cuts will affect various segments, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), retail, Prime Video, and human resources.

Beth Galetti, Amazon's senior vice president of people experience and technology, stated that the organization is focused on minimizing bureaucracy while empowering teams. Although she indicated that extensive layoffs will not be typical, teams will regularly assess their structures for necessary adjustments.

Earlier, chief executive Andy Jassy had mentioned that AI tools could automate numerous functions, potentially leading to a reduced corporate workforce in the future. Additionally, Amazon is heavily investing in warehouse automation and AI-driven data centre technologies to enhance efficiency and support cloud services.

The job cuts account for a minor fraction of Amazon's extensive workforce, which exceeds 1.5 million, most of whom are employed in warehouses and fulfillment centers.

Amazon is set to release its quarterly earnings next week, which will further clarify its financial health and ongoing AI initiatives.
