Zoox Introduces Free Driverless Rides in San Francisco

Post by : Bianca Haleem

San Francisco is witnessing the dawn of a new transportation era. Zoox, a subsidiary of Amazon, has begun offering select users the chance to book its driverless robotaxis in various city locations.

The initiative, called the “Zoox Explorers” program, invites residents from neighborhoods such as SoMa, Mission, and Design districts to experience their uniquely designed boxy vehicles without charge. While availability hinges on specific areas as well as fleet growth, the company is committed to eliminating waitlists by 2026.

What sets Zoox apart in the competitive robotaxi landscape is its innovative design; instead of modifying traditional vehicles, Zoox built its cars from the ground up, removing the steering wheel altogether. The company has been pioneering autonomous technology in San Francisco since 2017, initially utilizing modified Toyota Highlanders before introducing its custom-built shuttle designs.

This rollout positions Zoox in direct competition with Waymo, also operating in San Francisco for the first time. Waymo began offering rides to the city's residents in June 2024 and has already completed over 10 million paid rides since its debut in Phoenix in 2020. The service has recently expanded to freeways and new locations like San Jose and Los Angeles.

Currently, Zoox boasts a fleet of 50 robotaxis operating in San Francisco as well as Las Vegas, where public service commenced in September 2025. Although rides are currently free, this initiative is part of a larger plan aimed at integrating paid services upon receiving necessary regulatory clearances.

In addition to these two cities, Zoox has conducted trials in significant U.S. urban centers like Seattle, Austin, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C., illustrating its ambition to become a key player in the autonomous ride-hailing sector.

With this expansion, residents of San Francisco can preview a future where AI-driven vehicles might transform their daily commutes, providing an unparalleled ride experience in the city.
