In a pivotal address at the ASEAN Future Forum 2026 in Hanoi, Thailand's Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul presented a forward-looking vision for the ASEAN community. He underscored the importance of unity, resilience, and enhanced collaboration to secure both peace and prosperity for future generations.
During the opening session themed “Shaping Our Future Together: Peace, Prosperity, People-Centered,” Anutin commended Vietnam for hosting the forum amidst a rapidly transforming global landscape. He highlighted the ongoing geopolitical tensions, shifts in international trade, rapid technological changes, and climate impacts that are reshaping both regional and global systems, presenting both challenges and opportunities for ASEAN.
The Prime Minister stressed that ASEAN is among the world’s most stable and dynamic regions, with the potential to attract investments, foster innovation, and ensure sustainable growth. He emphasized that the future trajectory of the bloc hinges on collective decisions made by member states today and called for maintaining ASEAN’s central role in promoting peace, security, and open cooperation.
A significant aspect of his message revolved around resilience as a vital cornerstone for long-term prosperity. Anutin advocated for accelerated economic integration and improved connectivity in both physical and digital infrastructures. He welcomed advancements towards the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), viewing it as a pivotal step to harness the region’s immense digital economic potential.
Furthermore, he spotlighted Thailand’s Southern Land Bridge initiative aimed at bolstering global supply chains by offering an alternative transportation route and alleviating pressure on congested maritime channels. He affirmed Thailand’s readiness to bolster regional energy security by supplying aviation fuel from its surplus to fellow ASEAN nations.
Beyond just economic success, Anutin articulated that ASEAN should focus on enhancing the quality of life for its people. He urged the region to prioritize public safety, healthcare, education, and the development of skills while tackling shared challenges like cybercrime, healthcare risks, and natural disasters. Special emphasis should be on empowering the youth to navigate emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.
In discussing Thailand's relationship with Cambodia, Anutin described the current moment as crucial for both countries, emphasizing that enduring peace and improved ties require trust, political commitment, and sincere dialogue. He expressed confidence that both nations could foster a more cooperative future through mutual engagement.
In closing, Anutin reaffirmed Thailand’s dedication to collaborating closely with ASEAN countries and global partners to turn shared aspirations into tangible outcomes. He noted that ASEAN’s foundational strengths—stability, connectivity, and trust—are essential for attracting investment and ensuring a prosperous future for the region's citizens.
