Apple to Enable AI Model Selection in iOS 27 Update

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Apple is gearing up for a significant shift in AI functionality across its devices. Reports from TechCrunch and Bloomberg indicate that the upcoming iOS 27 may introduce a feature allowing users to choose the AI models that drive various functions on iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Internally known as “Extensions,” this feature is projected to transform Apple’s AI into a more versatile platform. Users could opt for third-party AI tools to enhance Siri interactions, provide writing help, generate images, and utilize other intelligent features directly through the Settings app.

Current tests reportedly include AI models from firms such as Google and Anthropic.

This potential update would represent a notable pivot in Apple's long-standing strategy of maintaining strict control over its software and minimizing external integrations. The increasing momentum of generative AI has intensified competition, with Microsoft and OpenAI rapidly embedding AI capabilities into their offerings.

Apple's AI framework, Apple Intelligence, was first introduced in 2024, combining on-device processing with cloud capabilities via its Private Cloud Compute technology. The primary external AI collaboration has been with ChatGPT thus far.

With the launch of iOS 27, Apple could greatly enhance personalization. Users might select specific AI models tailored to their requirements, such as one for writing, another for voice assistance, and yet another for tasks like image generation or summarizing notifications.

This change could significantly alter how individuals interact with their devices, providing enhanced flexibility and user control over AI functionalities.

The timing of this initiative is pivotal as the AI landscape becomes increasingly competitive, with companies racing to establish their AI systems as integral to future digital interactions. By broadening its platform, Apple may strive to sustain adaptability while ensuring users remain engaged within its ecosystem.

Details will likely emerge during Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference, anticipated to spotlight AI developments.
