Ariane 6 lifted off from France’s Kourou spaceport in French Guiana on Tuesday evening, departing at 6:02 pm local time (21:02 GMT) with the Sentinel‑1D satellite onboard as part of the European Union’s Copernicus Earth observation programme.
The flight was the third commercial mission for Ariane 6 since the expendable rocket entered service last year. Sentinel‑1D, produced by Thales Alenia Space, weighs slightly more than two tonnes and carries advanced radar sensors able to image the planet regardless of cloud cover or daylight.
The satellite is scheduled to operate in a 693‑kilometre orbit. Separation from the launch vehicle was set for 33 minutes and 51 seconds after lift‑off to ensure accurate insertion into its planned trajectory.
The Sentinel‑1 family provides high‑resolution radar imagery used for forest management, disaster monitoring and maritime surveillance. Its round‑the‑clock, all‑weather capability will enhance Europe’s ability to track environmental and climatic changes.
Authorities said the mission highlights the increasing sophistication of Europe’s space technology and affirms Ariane 6’s reliability for delivering heavy observation payloads to orbit.
