Ashghal Recycles Millions of Tons of Waste in Qatar Projects

Ashghal Recycles Millions of Tons of Waste in Qatar Projects

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Qatar's Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced major progress in sustainable construction practices through the building projects it has been carrying out since 2022.

In a statement released on Monday, Ashghal said it has introduced an integrated system for managing and recycling construction and demolition (C&D) waste. The initiative is designed to improve the use of resources, reduce waste generation, and support the principles of the circular economy. These efforts are aligned with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy.

Millions of Cubic Metres of Excavated Material Reused

According to Ashghal, around 2.5 million cubic metres of excavated material have been redirected to the recycling facilities of Qatar Primary Materials Company instead of being discarded.

The authority said this approach has helped make better use of available materials while reducing the amount of construction waste requiring disposal.

More Than 300,000 Tons of Construction Waste Recycled

Ashghal also reported that it has successfully recycled more than 300,000 tons of construction and demolition (C&D) waste as part of its sustainability programme.

The authority said these recycling efforts are aimed at reducing environmental impact and encouraging the reuse of valuable construction materials in future projects.

Wood, Plastic, Paper and Metal Waste Diverted for Recycling

The statement highlighted that approximately 80,000 tons of wood waste have been reused directly at project sites.

In addition, Ashghal diverted several other waste materials to approved recycling facilities, including:

  • 7,000 tons of plastic waste
  • 3,000 tons of paper waste
  • 1,000 tons of scrap metal

The authority said these measures support responsible waste management and improve resource efficiency across its construction projects.

Food Waste Converted into Organic Compost

Ashghal also revealed that nearly 8,000 tons of food waste have been reused instead of being discarded.

According to the authority, the food waste has either been converted into organic compost or processed at designated facilities, helping reduce waste while supporting environmentally friendly disposal methods.

Supporting Qatar's Sustainability Goals

Ashghal said its waste management and recycling programme reflects its commitment to sustainable development by improving resource efficiency, reducing waste, and promoting circular economy practices.

The authority noted that these initiatives support the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy, while strengthening sustainability across the country's construction sector.
