Ashley Young Bids Farewell to Football After a Stellar 23-Year Journey

Post by : Shweta

Ashley Young, a respected defender known for his time with Manchester United and the England national team, has made the decision to retire from professional football. The 40-year-old revealed that he will hang up his boots at the conclusion of the current season after completing his tenure with Ipswich Town.

In a heartfelt social media post, Young expressed that his football career had been a dream come to fruition. He reflected on his illustrious 23-year journey, extending gratitude to fans, teammates, coaches, and family who supported him throughout his path.

Young’s remarkable career included stints at several prominent clubs like Watford, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Everton, and Ipswich Town, culminating in over 750 club appearances and 88 goals across various competitions.

He began his professional journey with Watford in 2003, where he quickly rose to fame. His talent earned him a transfer to Aston Villa, where he became a top attacking player, clinching the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2009. His impactful displays led to his move to Manchester United in 2011.

At Manchester United, he experienced the pinnacle of his club career, securing the Premier League title in the 2012-13 season under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson. Young also celebrated victories in the FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Europa League, successfully transitioning from winger to full-back and later serving as club captain.

Following his departure from Manchester United, Young joined Inter Milan, where he won the Serie A title in the 2020-21 season, becoming one of the few English players to claim league titles in both England and Italy.

Internationally, Young represented England 39 times, scoring seven goals and participating in major tournaments like UEFA Euro 2012 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup. His versatility and leadership were invaluable assets to the England squad for many years.

Even in recent seasons, Young maintained a professional playing career, becoming one of the oldest active players in English football. He joined Ipswich Town in 2025, aiming to assist the club in achieving promotion. However, injuries limited his contributions during the latter months of the season.

Following his retirement announcement, tributes have poured in from fans, former teammates, and clubs across England and Europe, celebrating Young’s professionalism and adaptability throughout his career. Messages of appreciation filled social media, honoring his profound impact on English football.

Ashley Young retires as a highly regarded figure in English football, symbolizing longevity, discipline, and success from his roots at Watford to his trophy-laden adventures with Manchester United and Inter Milan.
