Assam Floods Claim 68 Lives as Conditions Slowly Improve

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Conditions in Assam are showing signs of improvement as of Sunday, although over 524,700 individuals remain impacted by floods across five districts, as reported by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

According to the latest update from ASDMA, the districts facing severe flooding include Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, and Sivasagar. Water levels have receded in many areas, but numerous residents still confront flood-associated issues.

The number of affected individuals has decreased from approximately 655,000 in six districts as of Saturday, indicating gradual progress in managing the flood situation.

Reported Death Toll Reaches 68

The ASDMA has confirmed that two additional fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours due to drowning in floodwaters in Charaideo district.

This brings the current death toll in Assam related to this year's floods to a total of 68.

Charaideo: Most Affected District

Among the impacted areas, Charaideo is the most severely hit, with nearly 190,000 residents facing the consequences of flooding.

Additional districts suffering greatly include:

  • Sivasagar: More than 150,000 individuals affected
  • Jorhat: Approximately 140,000 individuals affected

Despite improvements in some areas, normal life continues to be disrupted in the severely affected districts.

Ongoing Relief Efforts for Displaced Residents

Relief operations are actively continuing for displaced individuals as state authorities respond to the crisis.

The ASDMA indicates that 354 relief camps and aid distribution centers are operational across four districts, catering to 37,724 displaced individuals receiving necessary assistance.

Rescue operations conducted by the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire & Emergency Service, and local police have successfully reached numerous people stranded in various Upper Assam locations.

Widespread Damage to Villages, Crops, and Infrastructure

The latest ASDMA report indicates that 763 villages are still grappling with flooding issues across the state.

The floods have wreaked havoc on agriculture, affecting 48,742.09 hectares of cropland and causing significant economic losses.

Moreover, critical infrastructure such as embankments, roads, bridges, and public facilities have sustained substantial damage throughout multiple districts.

Dhansiri River Continues to Pose Danger

The Dhansiri River at Numaligarh remains above the danger threshold, as noted by disaster management officials.

Authorities are keeping a vigilant watch as the river’s water levels continue to stay elevated.

Impact on Livestock and Domestic Animals

The floods have also taken a toll on livestock across Assam.

According to the ASDMA, an estimated 88,240 domestic animals and poultry are affected due to the extensive flooding in the area.
