Bowen Yang Bids Farewell to SNL Mid-Season, Last Show This Saturday

Post by : Meena Hassan

Bowen Yang is set to conclude his time on Saturday Night Live in the midst of the current season, ending his remarkable tenure on the iconic NBC sketch comedy program. His exit signifies a pivotal moment for the long-standing series, where Yang has risen as one of its most recognizable and impactful performers in recent years.

Variety reports that Yang's last performance as an SNL cast member is scheduled for this Saturday. The episode will be hosted by pop sensation and actress Ariana Grande, who stars alongside him in the upcoming film Wicked. Legendary artist Cher will provide the musical entertainment, setting the stage for a grand farewell to the comedian.

At 35 years old, Yang began his journey with Saturday Night Live in September 2018 as part of the writing team for its 44th season. His distinctive humor and unique style quickly caught attention behind the scenes. By 2019, he transitioned to an on-screen cast member for Season 45 and swiftly became one of the show's most acclaimed performers, known for his bold characters and timely commentary on politics and culture.

Earlier this year, Yang suggested that his departure from SNL was on the horizon. In an April interview with People magazine, he discussed the show's evolving landscape, noting that SNL is a "living" platform that continuously freshens its talent roster. He mentioned that longtime cast members must ultimately pave the way for new voices, hinting that his exit was on the horizon.

Throughout his time on Saturday Night Live, Yang garnered significant critical acclaim. He received Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025, underscoring his consistent impact on the series. Additionally, in 2019, he earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, reflecting his dual role as both performer and writer.

Yang joins a group of cast members who have left SNL mid-season. After Season 48, actress Cecily Strong also exited the show in December 2022. His departure aligns with a larger cast transition announced earlier this year.

Several other performers have confirmed their exits from the show, including Devon Walker, who shared his departure after three seasons via Instagram. Ego Nwodim, Emil Wakim, Michael Longfellow, and Heidi Gardner have also disclosed their exits.

Bowen Yang's departure marks a significant chapter's end for Saturday Night Live. As fans gear up for his final show this weekend, many are contemplating his profound contributions to the series and his influence on the future direction of SNL comedy.
