AT&T Exceeds Subscriber Goals as iPhone 17 Promotions Gain Traction

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In the third quarter, AT&T exceeded subscriber expectations, bringing in more wireless customers than forecasted, thanks to aggressive iPhone 17 promotions and appealing bundled plans.

The telecommunications leader added 405,000 new bill-paying wireless subscribers, outpacing the predicted 334,100 figure. This success underscores the efficacy of its strategy that melds wireless services with fiber broadband. Notably, more than 41% of fiber households have chosen to bundle mobile services, which reduces customer churn and fosters loyalty.

During this crucial quarter for U.S. wireless carriers, AT&T effectively utilized the launch of Apple's latest iPhone by implementing targeted promotions aimed at attracting new customers and encouraging upgrades to premium plans. This strategy not only enhanced subscriber counts but also resulted in a 6.1% increase in equipment revenue, signaling robust phone sales.

AT&T's mobility division did see a 3.8% rise in operating costs, mainly due to the introduction of more expensive devices and intensified marketing surrounding the iPhone launch. However, the business wireline sector faced hurdles, reporting a 7.8% decline in revenue due to diminishing legacy voice and data services.

In total, AT&T's third-quarter revenue hit $30.7 billion, falling short of the $30.87 billion forecast. Adjusted earnings per share reached 54 cents, aligning with market forecasts. The company's commitment to strategic investments, which includes a $23 billion purchase of wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar, highlights its aim to enhance network capabilities for future expansion.

Even with a slight revenue miss, the quarter underscores AT&T's capacity to boost subscriber acquisitions through innovative bundling, promotional tactics, and deliberate investments, keeping it competitive within the overcrowded wireless sector.
