Balen Shah, Former Rapper and Kathmandu Mayor, Joins Prime Minister Race Amid Youth Uprisings

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Nepal is experiencing a significant political transformation as a former rapper steps up to vie for the nation's highest office. Balendra Shah, known popularly as Balen, has declared his candidacy for prime minister in the forthcoming parliamentary elections set for March 5. This announcement follows an intense wave of youth protests that have disrupted the political status quo and compelled seasoned leaders to relinquish their positions.

Balen, aged 35 and the current mayor of Kathmandu, has garnered substantial popularity among the youth of Nepal. Before his political journey, he was celebrated for his rap music, which often tackled societal issues with incisive commentary. His rise reflects a growing discontent among the electorate, particularly among younger citizens, with the entrenched political entities that have governed Nepal for over three decades.

In the lead-up to the election, Balen has aligned himself with the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), a new political entity headed by Rabi Lamichhane, a former TV personality turned politician. Their agreement stipulates that Balen will take on the role of prime minister if the RSP secures an election victory, while Lamichhane continues as party leader. Analysts view this collaboration as a combination of youthful charisma and a structured political agenda.

This alliance is a response to the forceful “Gen Z” protests that erupted in September, where young protestors across Nepal rallied against corruption, ineffective governance, and the scarcity of opportunities. The protests resulted in chaos in certain areas, leading to 77 fatalities and eventually prompting the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli. This unrest has illustrated one of the gravest political crises in recent Nepali history.

While Balen was not a prominent figure at protest sites, many young activists regard him as a beacon of resistance. He utilized social media to engage with supporters and later participated in establishing a transitional government under former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, currently overseeing election activities.

Nepal boasts almost 19 million eligible voters out of a total population nearing 30 million. Following the protests, nearly a million new voters, primarily youth, have been added to the rolls, positioning young voters as a formidable force in the impending election and posing challenges for older political factions.

For years, Nepal's political landscape has been dominated by the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (UML). Leaders from these parties have dismissed the significance of the new alliance, dubbing both Balen and Lamichhane as contentious figures. They maintain that experience and stability will outweigh popularity during the elections.

Supporters of Balen and Lamichhane counter argue that Nepal requires leaders who resonate with the aspirations and grievances of the younger generation. They advocate for fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to alleviate the entrenched issues of corruption and inadequate governance that have hindered the nation’s development.

Although uncertainties linger regarding Balen’s leadership approach and Lamichhane’s legal issues, their coalition is already influencing political discourse. The upcoming March elections will reveal whether the electorate embraces a new vanguard of leadership or opts to revert to established political powers.

Clearly, Nepal’s youth have amplified their voices. Through protests, electoral engagement, and political activity, they are crafting the future of their country in unprecedented ways.
