Shakib Al Hasan Banned From Playing Cricket for Bangladesh

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Bangladesh sports advisor Asif Mahmud has declared that former men’s cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan will never be allowed to play for the country again. Mahmud made the remarks public after Shakib posted a birthday wish for former prime minister Sheikh Hasina on social media. The advisor said that until this announcement, he had not issued a formal directive to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), but now he has.

Shakib’s Social Media Post Sparks Controversy

Shakib’s social media post, which wished Sheikh Hasina a happy birthday, became a source of controversy. Mahmud argued that Shakib had been “intricately involved with Awami League politics.” He claimed that since the Hasina-led party was ousted earlier this year by a public-led movement, it was inappropriate for Shakib to be associated with them while representing Bangladesh in cricket.

Advisor’s Remarks to Media

Speaking to Dhaka-based Channel 24, Mahmud said, “We cannot let him carry the Bangladesh flag. It won’t be possible for me to allow him to wear the Bangladesh jersey. Maybe I haven’t told the BCB before, but now my clear direction for the BCB would be that Shakib Al Hasan can never again play for Bangladesh.” These remarks underline the advisor’s firm stance against Shakib’s return to the national team.

Alleged Political Involvement

Mahmud revealed off-camera that Shakib had previously requested permission to play for Bangladesh. According to the advisor, Shakib had claimed that the Awami League gave him the nomination for the 2024 general election forcibly, and he insisted he was not politically involved. “He wanted to become an MP to work for the people of his area [Magura]. The truth, however, is that he is intricately involved in the Awami League’s politics,” Mahmud stated.

Shakib’s Defense

Shakib has publicly denied any political motives behind his birthday wish. He said, “She [Hasina] has always followed cricket seriously – isn’t that right? She was deeply involved with cricket. We had a relationship through that, even before politics. I wished her from that point of view. There was no other motive or trying to instigate anyone.” He insisted that his message was related only to cricket and not to politics.

Reaction on Social Media

Shakib also took to social media to respond to Mahmud’s remarks. He wrote, “So someone has finally accepted that it’s because of him that I can never put on the Bangladesh jersey again, because of whom I can’t play for Bangladesh again. Maybe I will return to my motherland one day. Love you, Bangladesh.” His statement reflects his disappointment and continued affection for his country despite the ban.

Impact on Bangladesh Cricket

Shakib Al Hasan has been one of Bangladesh’s most prominent cricketers, leading the national team and earning accolades internationally. His exclusion from the team has sparked debates among cricket fans and analysts. Many supporters argue that his cricketing record and experience make him an invaluable asset for Bangladesh, while others believe political issues should not influence sports decisions.

Public Discussion Continues

The controversy has generated discussions across social media and sports forums in Bangladesh. Fans are divided, with some criticizing Mahmud for mixing politics with sports, while others back his decision, citing the importance of neutrality in national representation. Analysts have pointed out that this situation highlights the complex relationship between sports, politics, and public perception in the country.

With the official ban in place, Shakib’s participation in international cricket for Bangladesh is now uncertain. While he may continue to play in domestic leagues or overseas tournaments, his absence from the national team marks a significant shift in Bangladesh cricket. His statement about possibly returning to his motherland keeps a small hope alive among fans, but no official reversal has been indicated.

The strong stance by Bangladesh sports advisor Asif Mahmud has formally closed the door on Shakib Al Hasan’s national cricket career for now. The situation emphasizes the sensitive balance between politics and sports in Bangladesh. Shakib’s denial of political motives and emotional response show the personal and professional impact of this decision. Fans and the cricketing community continue to watch closely for any updates regarding this high-profile case.
