Bangladesh is facing significant backlash following its decision not to participate in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup matches in India. Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary has alleged that political interference from the country’s cricket authorities heavily influenced this choice, raising concerns for players and the future of the sport.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) approached the International Cricket Council (ICC) to transfer their matches to a different location, citing security issues as the primary reason. However, the ICC rejected this request, compelling the team to either compete in India or withdraw entirely from the tournament. The T20 World Cup is scheduled to commence on February 7, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
Tiwary remarked that the decision emanated more from the Sports Ministry than from the cricket board itself. He stated, “In their country, politics has entered the picture, and political figures have become heavily involved in the board. These kinds of decisions are emerging because of political interference.”
Furthermore, Tiwary challenged the safety concerns, pointing out that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has traveled to India without incident. He mentioned, “If a country's Prime Minister can come and live safely here, then the players will definitely get safety.”
The players are understandably disheartened, as competing in a World Cup is a pivotal moment in any cricketer’s career. Tiwary emphasized the need to separate sports from politics, stating, “This is a loss for the players. They want to play for their country and perform well in the World Cup, which boosts their careers. But it wasn’t in their hands.”
Bangladesh is set to kick off their T20 World Cup journey against the West Indies on February 7 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Following that, they will face Italy on February 9 and England in Kolkata, before heading to Mumbai to clash with Nepal at Wankhede Stadium. The current impasse could hamper the team’s preparation and overall morale leading up to these critical matches.
This incident underscores the complex relationship between politics and sports, shedding light on how external decisions can profoundly affect athletes and international competitions. Observers, including Tiwary, argue that cricket boards must maintain independence and that political influences should not hinder players' opportunities to shine on the global stage.
